WebbThe principle of proportionality in international law exists both in the law regulating the resort to force—or jus ad bellum —and the law that governs how wars are fought, or jus in bello. In both spheres of law, proportionality seeks to constrain force in relation to a certain lawful objective. WebbThe work first examines the general notion of proportionality in defensive harming. It then explores proportionality in the resort to war and explains why the traditional theory of just war claims that proportionality in individual acts of war must be different.
