WebMar 15, 2001 · Dick Gilbert was born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1924. He joined the Army-Air Force in 1942, and served as a bombardier on a B-26 until he was shot down over Germany in February of 1945. He was liberated in May of 1945, and went on to fly F-51s and, ultimately, helicopters.
